Author Bill Bryson is the latest celebrated talent to lend support to the Future Fund and help raise money to create a specialist children’s cancer research facility at Newcastle University.

The world-renowned writer will be hosting and speaking at the launch of Children’s Cancer Research Week, organised by the charity North of England Children’s Cancer Research (NECCR) – a partner in the Future Fund along with Newcastle University and Newcastle Hospitals’ Great North Children’s Hospital (GNCH).

Bill will host an intimate dinner on the evening of Friday, September 19, at Jesmond Dene House, Newcastle with all donations being directed to the Future Fund campaign and he will take part in the Children’s Cancer Walk at the Blagdon Estate, Northumberland the following day.

Bill began supporting the work of children’s cancer researchers in the North East three years ago after being personally touched by the experience of a friend’s young son who fought leukaemia with the help of researchers and clinicians in Newcastle. The boy’s doctor, Professor Josef Vormoor, Director of the Northern Institute for Cancer Research at Newcastle University (NICR)and Honorary Consultant Paediatric Oncologist at the GNCH, went on to set up the Future Fund to raise £5.5 million to create the Newcastle University Centre for Childhood Cancer where new children’s cancer therapies with fewer side effects can be developed.

Bill Bryson said: “Nothing is more important than defeating childhood cancer, and I don’t know any group of people more devoted and ingenious and good than those behind the Future Fund and the NECCR.  They deserve all the support we can give them, as do the kids they help.”

On behalf of the Future Fund, Chris Peacock, Chairman of NECCR, added: “Bill Bryson is one of the most interesting and humorous writers of this time. He has been a long-term supporter of our work and we thank him for his generosity.

“The Children’s Cancer Walk will give families a wonderful opportunity to walk and talk with Bill in the stunning surroundings of the Blagdon Estate and we are inviting everyone to come along and help us to raise some crucial funds.”

A whole series of other events are lined up for Children’s Cancer Research Week, including a free lecture by Professor Christine Harrison who will provide an insight into the pioneering work that is taking place at Newcastle University’s Northern Institute of Cancer Research.  The lecture takes place on Wednesday, September 24, at 5.30pm at The Curtis Auditorium, Newcastle University.

A string of famous names have already thrown their weight behind the Future Fund campaign including: Sting, Mark Knopfler and David Almond.
